The Celebration of Hari Kartini in ORA et LABORA Junior High School
(by Christoffer Hosea Situmorang)
“ Ibu kita Kartini, putri sejati, putri Indonesia, harum namanya…”
If we listen to a part of Ibu Kita Kartini song which was composed by W.R. Supratman, we will absolutely remember a woman named R.A. Kartini. She is one of female heroes in Indonesia who fights for equal rights and dignity between men and women long time ago. R.A. Kartini was born in Jepara on 21st of April 1879. Thus, her born date becomes our National Holiday to honor her patriotism.
The celebration of Hari Kartini in ORA et LABORA Junior High School was lively held. There was a difference in students and teachers’ uniform on that day. All men used batik shirt and all women used kebaya modern. The celebration was first opened with a flag ceremony. Almost all officers who were involved in the flag ceremony were women. Miss Agustin was the one who led the flag ceremony. On her speech, Miss Agustin said that all women must keep up their spirit to achieve their dreams and not to be afraid to compete with men. Just like Ibu Kartini who fought for women’s right in order to have better education. The flag ceremony was held at 7 to 8 a.m. After that, all students of grade 7 and 8 got into their classes and had some lessons while students of grade 9 did Uji Coba Ujian Nasional until 10 a.m.
After all students of grade 7 and 8 finished the lessons, they joined some competition coordinated by OSIS. Students of grade 9 still continued their lessons to prepare the national exam on 4th up to 7th of May. Some competitions were cooking competition, photography contest, make up contest and singing competition named “Berpacu dalam Melodi.” The unique thing on the cooking competition was the participants were all men. They cooked fried rice. As the judges we had Miss Ana, Miss Raras, Angel and Rachel. For the photography contest, the theme of their photograph was things related to Hari Kartini at school. In singing competition, the contestants were challenged to complete the lyrics given by OSIS. The makeup contest was only for female students. One student from each class was put on makeup by two of her classmates. The contestants performed beautifully in front of judges who were Miss Laura, Miss Asih, Kathleen and Elisabeth. All activities finished at 1.20 p.m. The celebration of Hari Kartini was closed in a prayer and all winners were given the special gifts after that.
